How Deer see Your Landscape in the Evening           How you see Deer in the Morning

Fortunately, there are solutions...

Deer are cute, but can trash $10,000 worth of landscaping per evening.   Finding plants that deer will not eat is tricky.  Deer eat everything and change their tastes every season.  Here are a few tips for controlling marauding deer and hopefully saving your landscape:

Put up an 8' fence (Please keep in mind that deer can clear a 6' fence without even trying).
Install electrically-charged fencing.  Kits are available at the local hardware store.
Get a couple of ferocious dogs Dogs1.gif (4836 bytes)and keep them outside patrolling your landscape.
Install automatic scat sprinklers scatSprinkler.GIF (16086 bytes)to zap anything that moves in your yard.  These zappers shoot a harmless stream of cold water at uninvited pests and are available at warehouse-style pet stores.
Repellants:   Deer Away® granules Deeraway2.JPG (28345 bytes) and spray Deeraway1.JPG (18861 bytes) works well against deer and rabbits.  Deer Away® is available at local hardware stores.  A home-spun remedy is a mixture of 2 eggs, 1 Cup Skim Milk, 1 Cup Water.  Spray this mixture on your plants every 1-2 weeks.
Plant things deer don't particularly like to eat.  California Native Plants are usually a good place to start.  Below are a few deer-proof and deer-resistant plants.  Also of note, deer do not care for strong-flavored plants like garlic, onions and many herbs.

Lastly, If you can't beat 'em, feed 'em.  We have an acquaintance who puts out a bale of hay (or alfalfa) every week to keep the deer well-fed and out of her yard.  She swears it works!  Deer are also salt fanatics.  A strategically placed 5-LB salt lick keeps deer out of your foodstuffs and personal belongings.

NEW!  The latest and greatest, only from Donalea Plant Brokers!  Introducing the 'Flying Dragon' Citrus (Trifoliate Orange). Citrus Flying Dragon.jpg (273960 bytes) This deciduous, 6' Tall bush contains lots of nasty fishhook-like curved thorns and currently stands guard at a nursery we visit regularly. 'Flying Dragon' is an attractive exotic that puts out big fragrant flowers each spring, followed by leaves and eventually inedible golf ball-sized yellow fruit that hangs on until December.  We supply this unusual plant in 5-Gallon cans.
